CRAFTSMANSHIP

Once the plates have been flattened and dried-up,they all look more or less the same in color.

Once the choice of plates has been made, they are then pressed together in a patent-protected process called “Triple Safety System” ®.

Unlike other manufacturers of horn frames, CERF BOIS EYEWEAR is made of up to 9 layers of horn which are combined by crossing their natural fiber structure directions. This unique process ensures that the final frame will be more resistant and keep its original shape for a long time.

After the thinning process

The inner color of the horn will be revealed progressively, as each plate will be made thinner by feeding it manually between two polishing wheels. This “thinning” process has to be repeated (sometimes more than 20 times) until the color appears by transparency.

From 5 millimeters at the beginning of the thinning process, the thickness of each plate is progressively reduced to approximately 0.5 millimeter, or even less in the case of very rare colors.

For CERF BOIS EYEWEAR, the most important part of the manufacturing process begins. It is the delicate phase of color composition. It is conducted by a highly experienced craftsman, who, like a music composer, will determine the final color and nuances, by combining several plates together.

However, since each horn is unique in texture and color, the final color composition is never exactly the same.
